What a delight to read the recipes of 100 years ago
This was a delightful cookbook to read. My grandmother married in 1910 so this gave me insight to what type of desserts were being made then. Sweets were not served daily in my grandmother's home but she always had a cookie jar filled with tea cakes even when company wasn't expected. Now, her favorite cake to bake for guest was a coconut cake made from breaking open a whole coconut with a hammer. She never measured any ingredients. Flour and sugar was poured from a bag into the mixing bowl a nice size lump of butter was spooned in, lots of eggs and a capful of vanilla extract. ( I learned as a child the cap on vanilla extract is equal to a teaspoon and that continues until this day!). I plan on trying a couple of the recipes. Thank you for sharing this attic find with us!

Not as pictured
I thought I was getting what was actually pictured, a little black book of recipes not an oversized photo copy of a book. The recipes have been retyped up and left original. There are typos and a little interpretation is needed as some of them say " bake 10-15 minutes in a quick oven." Flip to the front and a "quick oven" is 75-400 degrees Fahrenheit? I presume that's 375-400. It does have photos of the original recipes which is interesting and nice to see. Overall there appears to be approximately 50 recipes. Most seem to desserts. Very unique piece of history to use and keep handy especially for special occasions.

It wasn't very big, but everything I could have hoped for.
I liked the "old time" look of the cover, and the recipes inside did not disappoint!

Familiar
This was so much like my grandmother and great - grandmother's black books of recipes or receipts as my great - grandmother called her book. My mother had one and I do too. I have inherited them and have made many of the old recipes over the years. My great grandmothers ancestors were British and Irish and the recipes in this book were just the as the ones I have. Also back then ladies rarely wrote their everyday menu recipes down because you didn't measure, you cooked from memory for those foods. Cakes and desserts and fancy dishes had measurements and were written. My grandmother has been dead 20 years and was 100 when she died. When she was in her 80's she asked me to make cream puffs by her old recipe and egg custard pie. She was delighted and said they were like eating in old times. This book is wonderful for those of you who were not blessed with a grandmother born in the late 1800's like I was and got to know her into my early adulthood. I encourage everyone to have a Little Black Cook Book because my nieces, nephews, daughter and granddaughter have all taken recipes from mine and it will pass on.

Terrible
Very big disappointment. Shown as a vintage tattered looking book and doesn’t look anything like it when I rec’d it.

Packed full of Memories!
What a delightful little book (emphasis on little)....This was like a road trip back through time to the days when I would watch my great grandma cook on her wood stove. I am 88 and have enjoyed many cookbooks but this one truly made my heart smile. Like the author says you need to be an advanced cook and Baker SS gives you ingredients and a rough idea of what to do but it is not full of directions for a novice. It is assumed that you understand bread baking and custard making before you even open the cover. I have tried several recipes including parking which is a version of gingerbread and the wartime fruitcake which is exactly like she used to make! No frills here...just straightforward basic ingredients...with delicious results. (PS . Treacle is molasses)
