![Inspector Morse - The Complete Series (18 DVD) [DVD] [1987]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61rsBWmBCvL.jpg)

Contains the following 33 episodes When Inspector Morse first appeared on television in 1987, nobody could have predicted that it would run into the next century, maintaining throughout a quality of scripts and storylines that raised the genre of the detective series to a new level. Much of its success can be attributed to John Thaw's total immersion in the role. Morse is a prickly character and not obviously easy to like. As a detective in Oxford with unfulfilled academic propensities, he is permanently excluded from a world of which he would dearly love to be a part. He is at odds with that world--and with his colleagues in the police force--most of the time. Passionate about opera and "proper beer", he is a cultural snob for whom vulgarity causes almost physical pain. As a result, he lives from one disillusionment to another. And he is scarred--more deeply than he would ever admit--by past relationships. But he also has a naïve streak and, deep down, sensitivity, which makes him a fascinating challenge for women. At the heart of Morse's professional life is his awkward partnership with Detective Sergeant Lewis, the resolutely ordinary, worldly sidekick who manages to keep his boss in an almost permanent state of exasperation while retaining his grudging respect. It's a testament to Kevin Whately's consistently excellent performance that from such unpromising material, Lewis becomes as indispensable to the series as Barrington Pheloung's hypnotic, classic theme music. Morse's investigations do occasionally take him abroad to more exotic locations, but throughout 14 successful years of often gruesome murders, the city of Oxford itself became a central character in these brooding two-hour dramas: creator Colin Dexter said he finally had to kill Morse off because he was giving Oxford a bad reputation as a dangerous place! -- Piers Ford Review: A true classic and a great collection! - Brilliant! Review: Morse - The Greatest - Here is one of those rare things that is so precious and is certainly worth every penny. I absolutely adore Inspector Morse and this DVD set is a brilliant collection to own. A red Jag, a pint of beer, crosswords, Oxford and of course...Lewis. Poor Lewis. If you love murder mysteries and have never watched Morse then you clearly must. The most important ingredient of the series though is clearly the late John Thaw. What a wonderfully gifted actor. He creates so much character to Morse that this is what makes the series so extra special. Without John Thaw, I believe it would not be the same. The music is absolutley beautiful throughout and you never tire of listening to it. So brilliant twists through the series and some personal issues involved too. Great stuff. Morse - best detective ever!

the definitive morse
We watched all the original morse programmes first time round and then various repeats. Never tire of it. Visited Oxford for the first time recently and did the Morse Walking Tour and suddenly realised that there was so much in the background we hadn't taken on board. Only through series 1 but thoroughly enjoying every minute. Each episode is on a separate DVD and the quality is fine considering the poor production of the original few episodes (not to mention the slightly wooden acting, surprising from some of the well known actors). Actively trying to find time now to watch the next series and looking forward to several enjoyable months to come. A real treat!

The Gift of a Lifetime....
It will be my father's 80th birthday soon and he LOVES Morse, way and above anything else - and nowadays he's deservedly and usually in front of his TV. He'll watch all the episodes repeated on ITV3, complete with their frequent and disjointed ad breaks. He admires Morse's profound sense of logic and decency and that dignified culture that John Thaw always portrayed, but still remained a "man's man". His lovely big Jag and Oxford's scenery are the icing on the cake. This is an expensive set, even with the good condition second-hand one I bought through Amazon. We will rely on his carer to load the discs in the DVD player and so I had long decided that it really had to be this superior Collector's Edition as I had read the cheaper set was fiddly, to make it smaller and cheaper. It needed to be simple to follow chronologically, as my Dad wouldn't know which episodes he'd seen from the discs alone. And, yes, it's sensibly and decently laid out. I had to play the first disc (of course!) to check the quality and compatibility. The transfer is fine, at least as good as 1980's TV can be and the sound was fine also. The overall size is about that of a very small piece of furniture but this is an item to be treasured, shown off and admired - and above all, enjoyed!

What incredible value for money !
James Grout & Kevin Whatley are superb as Messars Strange and Lewis - but the biggest round of applause must go to the late great John Thaw . The writing is of a very high standard indeed - you must concerntrate very hard to miss all the clues not to mention the umpteenth twist & turn during the last half of hour of each episode ! The special guest stars such as Peggy Mount , Robert Hardy , Anna Massey , Sir John Giulgud , Sean Bean , Jim Broadbent , Ian McDiarmand , Diane Fletcher , Zoe Wanamaker , Richard Briers , Richard Griffiths , Liz Hurley , Barbara Flynn and Michael Kitchen are outstanding in terms of the power that they bring to their performances . Their inclusion is fully merited and if you love that great City that is Oxford then it is a joy to see it on screen as it were . Fans of superb TV drama owe the ever first class Colin Dexter a great debt of gratitude . Amazon.co.uk are selling this at a very fair price and if you love murder mystery then this collection strongly merits being in your collection !

Great Package - A Bargain for the £69.97 I paid !
Do not be dissuaded by previous reviewers as they are either wrong or Amazon has combined reviews for alternative 'Morse' boxsets being sold. If you buy the declared 33 disc set (it may previously have been issued with fewer discs) each disc contains only 1 episode ! The packaging is fine (each series is in a cardboard sleeve with 1 disc per 'page' in the 'book' style housing for each series) with lots of photos of Morse and the picture/sound quality good for what is now a dated archive recording. (I have added 2 photos to the item page showing an example of the packaging for the case of each Series within the boxset) HOH subtitles are available and each disc has a picture gallery. All other features are as per the Amazon listing. Well worth buying if you enjoy, like me, the caustic nature of the working relationship between Morse and Lewis.
