Is this stuff the same as pumice?

As Matthew M suggested, I looked at the data sheet. 100% pumice by weight. The data sheet gives a Chemical Abstracts Service number (CAS#) for it, and that is 1332-09-8. Google that number.

It can be placed in your tray. it is loose. Might want to make sure you use a tray for the canister that has the lid on it.

Does it work the same way as the ceramic bio rings?

A million times better. The ceramic rings are trash. This has a lot more surface area because of the small cavaties in each piece. This stuff is fantastic for your bacteria.

I have a Magnum 350 filter which has a canister that has charcoal on the inside and a foam sleeve outside. Do I use this to replace the charcoal?

No, charcoal is a chemical filter. Matrix is a biological filter.If you did not need chemical filtering in your system, you could repurpose the Magnum 350 as a bio-filter by replacing the carbon with Matrix. This would help control ammonia/nitrites/nitrates at the expense of controlling organic pollutants.
