Works very well, but won't win any beauty contests.
I bought this double watch winder as a replacement for a Time Tutelary double winder which had started creaking and groaning. But as I have two other Time winders of the same type which are still giving perfect service after several years, I was looking for a direct replacement, only to find that the particular Time Tutelary model seems to have disappeared from both Amazon and eBay listings. So I chose this as an alternative, basically because it was the cheapest. There are several differences between my new and older winders, some of which seem improvements, and some not. Where the Time machine's rotation and rest phases are measured in hours, the Critiron (Criterion?? Critter Ron??) has a programme cycle in which the phases last for minutes but recur much more frequently. I'd say this was an advantage. On the Time winder, to change direction between clockwise and anti-clockwise you have to flick a switch. The Critiron does the job automatically, another advantage. It's also extremely quiet, but then so are my surviving Time winders. Where they have two separate spring-loaded mountings, my new one houses both watches on a single rotating mount, though I don't know which is the better system, if either. Overall, as far as performance is concerned, my new winder's increased frequency but shorter time of rotation is probably better, though time will tell..Now for the downsides. The Time winders have an easily-accessible On/Off switch on the top of the casing. The switch for the Critiron is, inconveniently, at the back of the machine. The Time mountings, being spring-loaded, easily accommodate all my watches.. The Critiron instead uses elliptical broad fabric bands kept in shape by being filled with a sort of cushion. If the mount is too big to accommodate your watch, you remove the cushion and just fit the watch on the outer band; if you have watches with fixed-diameter metal bracelets this will probably be necessary as it is with mine, though in fairness it should be said that removing the cushion doesn't affect the winder's performance.Where the Time winders are front-loading, the Critiron is top-loading with a lift-up lid so you need a reasonably tall shelf to stand it on. But for me it's the appearance rather than the performance where the Critiron scores lowest. The Time winders come, or came, in two finishes, one silver, one wood-effect, and both looked very sleek and smart. The Critiron on the other hand is very boxy, slightly narrower than the Time machines but nearly twice as tall and giving a bulky impression. There is a drawer in which you could keep a couple of watches or whatever, , but I would rather have had a more compact design. It's only my opinion, but the overall crocodile-leather effect , with a very obviously stuck-on front strip between the winding compartment and the drawer, looks pretty naff, and your friends are unlikely to cast covetous eyes on your new winder. So, overall, I'm very pleased with the way the Critiron winder is doing its job, and it may prove to be superior to the Time Tutelary in that most important respect. I don't like the watch mountings as much, though they too seem to work well; but in looks the Time winders seem classier even though they're not.Considering what you can pay for one of these gadgets, it has to be said that the Critiron does represent excellent value for money. Just take a careful look at the pictures to decide whether you can live with it, before buying.
