Q: what's the difference between the combo, head, and cabinet?

This combo amplifier has the power amplifier and speaker all as one unit. The other option is to get a head(power amplifier) and cabinet(speaker) separately.

Q: I returned my first fender rumble 100 because of a smell when the overdrive was kicked on and hit a new one that does the same thing,is this normal?

I’m fairly certain that what you are smelling isn’t coming from the amplifier. If you’re smelling something burning when you kick the overdrive on, then that is most likely the smell of your neighbors’ faces melting from your sick grooves. Turn it up, rock on, and keep slappin’ it like it’s Chris Rock.

Q: Would 100 watts be loud enough for small venues?

I played the 100 with a fairly loud rock band in a bar a few times. It definitely was loud enough but I was pushing it pretty hard, like 75% on the main volume, so I ended up going to the 500, which can do the same at about 40% volume.
