Musicin of stress
This is the perfect description of Schubert the man , and the Musician! Only a woman could write so directly about the "dark side to Schubert's character." No cringing nonsense about "Masters" or "Maestros" , just down to earth descriptions of, an often shy , unattractive wee man, who spent a fair deal of his short life in a darker world of whores , the pox, self loathing ........while, sometimes, writing the music of a rejected soul. Not all of Schubert's music is great, and almost all of the great music was written under the episodic stress of his pox ........but what would he have produced if allowed to live a few more winters? Would it have been better ?

Too much unneccessary detail
Rather dry and impersonal. The test of a good biography for me is how it makes you feel as regards the person you have read about and apart from occasional glimpses, sadly and ironically, in the final chapters, Schubert hardly comes to life, the image being obscured by an excess of extraneous information.Credit must be given however for both the erudition and painstaking research, although there were, I thought, a few too many "maybe"s , "possibly"s and "one may assume that"s. Lemberg (page 226) is of course Lviv in Ukraine and not Lwow in Poland.Having said that, it is a read for which I am grateful, but also somewhat relieved to have finished. So now back to the music, unfortunately not a Schubertiad, but " Keep on listening".
