Product description: When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter Annie (Toni Colette) and her husband (Gabriel Byrne) and their two children begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell. Extras: Featurette: The True Nature of Hereditary - 8 deleted scenes

Toni Collette Steals the Show
Hereditary is a veritable cavalcade of the worst emotions you could ever experience in the course of a lifetime. The Graham family experiences all of these emotions in the space of a few weeks. Toni Collette demonstrates her impeccable ability to subtly express emotions with as little as a glance (an ability that is only matched by perhaps Florence Pugh). Collette is supported brilliantly by Gabriel Byrne's Steve Graham, a character who must put his own turmoil to the side in order to hold together a family in crisis - while also remaining totally unaware of the true threats it faces. Alex Wolff's portrayal of their son, Peter Graham, is similarly excellent, in his tortured rendition of a normal teenage boy who becomes the ultimate victim of the cult's machinations. This is a film which demands you re-watch it multiple times. I have seen it more times than I can count, yet I am still noticing clues and details that I hadn't clocked before. Even characters who serve much smaller supporting roles are superb, particularly Ann Dowd's Joan. Whether it be through a tonal shift or a darting of her eyes, Dowd does an exemplary job of providing great depths of nuance to the character of Joan, giving the viewer that queasy sensation of uneasiness as they can tell something else is going on that they are not aware of... The performance of Mallory Bechtel as Bridget must also not go unacknowledged, as she does a fantastic job of providing an outsider's reaction to the goings-on within the Graham family - namely, a reaction of pure horror and fear.So much about this film is deserving of praise, from the novel cinematography to the accurate and well-researched portrayals of demonic lore and oppression. Perhaps best of all though, is Colin Stetson's score. To listen to the soundtrack of Hereditary is to hear the most raw and pained of human emotions converted into music itself. The musical pieces in the film accurately express how absolute and overwhelming these feelings can be. The score and film are inseparable and function as one, with each complementing the other to form an absolutely visceral experience. This film is extremely heavy, and it is perfect for that reason. Never before has emotional and psychological pain been so expertly portrayed on the silver screen. I simply cannot wait to see what Ari Aster does next!

Scariest film I’ve seen in years
This film literally gave me goosebumps, it had me hiding behind my pillow and that is very unusual for me.I’ve seen a LOT of horror films over the years, but this one really gave me that gut wrenching feeling. It’s on par with, John Carpenter’s The Thing for me (my all time favourite film), it’s not the same type of film at all, but it had that same effect on me. Dread, basically. This film reminded me of when I used to watch scary films as a child, when they could really effect you psychologically and actually scare you. Well, I’m an adult now but I felt that feeling coming back. It’s shocking, suspenseful and seriously scary. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a decent horror.

Fantastic film
This is one of the best horror movies in modern memory, hands down. Fantastic all around, and some of the best horror writing I’ve ever witnessed. A future classic no doubt. This disc doesn’t play in North America, so only order if you own a region free blu ray player.
