Yes, Prime Minister - Series One [1986] [DVD]

A 100 per cent professional job
This is, in many ways, even better than 'Yes, Minister'. Not only are Eddington, Hawthorne and Fowlds on top form, there is the welcome addition of Deborah Norton. Other members of the supporting cast are also superb, including Peter Cellier whose father was also a leading character actor, to be seen in British movies of the 30s and 40s.The writing is perfect, as is the timing. A 100 per cent professional job.

Living in the fish bowl part one
After 61 years of living tomorrow I finally get this series because its quick wit is fast on the draw for this Appalachian American. Still you won't have to spend your life in the fish bowl to laugh at the timeless social commentaries on government at its hopeful best and civil service at its hopeless worst. If only Gogol could be here to witness the guffaws of a leader in the grips of a follower instead of the other way around.

Hilarious...
Hilarious. There are episodes where I have literally fallen off my chair laughing. The Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister series are in my top-ten comedies of all-time. Additionally, with the turmoil around (dare I say it) Brexit, still relevant today...

It is still relevant today...even more so
A great series and well worth a look again after all these years. Surprisingly the themes haven't aged much (unlike me).

The saga continues ...
As might be expected, this series continues more or less where "Yes, Minister" left off with Jim Hacker elevated to Number 10 in the absence of anyone else colourless enough to be generally accepted by the party factions. He still flounders much as before but his battles with a similarly-promoted Sir Humphrey have become more serious, inter-departmental squabbles more substantial and the tone correspondingly darker. Remarkably, many of the topics remain startlingly relevant twenty-three years on from the original broadcast. It was a relief to hear from a former departmental Permanent Secretary that while much of the conduct portrayed was true to life, at least in his day neither politicans nor civil servants as a whole were so cynically self-seeking.
