I don't have a basement, can this be stored outside? Are there other suggestions for placement?

Yes, HDPE is UV stable and used for outdoor water tanks. The main issue is freezing. If your emergency water is a block of ice, you can't use it until it thaws. If you have space outdoors and freezing is not an issue, then you should look at other HDPE water tanks which hold more and/or are less expensive. You are paying a premium for this tank because it is designed to be as large as possible and still fit through a 30" wide residential doorway. If you don't need to pass through a 30" doorway, there are better choices.If you don't have room indoors and freezing is an issue, then another option is an underground tank but it would need to be buried below the frost line to avoid freezing, and you need some kind of pump to bring the water up out of the ground.

Can this be baby-proofed or somehow prevent toddlers or young children from spilling water on the floor?

The manufacture does not offer any child proof device that you need. It would be up to you to use your creativity

why is your price $250 more than what surewater sells it for, shipping included?

The biggest reason is we have to pay Amazon 20% right off the top and they have special shipping rates discounted with factory shipping agency. We also include the 25' hose, coupling and water treatment. We also sell on our website for much cheaper as well.

I would be looking at adapting this to use as a fermentor, and I would need the fittings either removed or changed to stainless. is that feasible?

I suspect you could use the tank for fermentation as long as there is no pressure build up inside the tank. To change the bulkhead fittings to stainless steel will add about $200 to the cost. Hope this helps- Randy
