Armstrong, Bolam, Redman, and Waterman in yet another great British cop show
A heavyweight TV superstar cast bringing the ethos of 'True Grit' (embracing old age disgracefully) to retired members of the police force. With small snapshots of their family life as well (aka Rose in Dr Who), they all come across as being 'real people' and perhaps because they are nice characters and such well known faces you care what happens to them (oh no don't hurt `Terry'). Far more 'real' than many mainstream cop shows (where the departmental in-fighting is often so dramatically over-exaggerated the only surprise is that no colleague gets battered to death with a coffee cup). It's got 'The Sweeney' clever backchat and one-liners with a bit less of it's violence, so it's quite suitable for the kids as well (I would have given it a 12 not 15). My daughter (12) loves the series. The stories reflect real life, some fairly clever people having a bit a laugh while dealing with the pressure of the tough job they have taken on. As they are all retired equals in the cop business they also have free reign to behave as rather non-PC mavericks - after all in the East End anything is legal as long as you don't get caught. It's not unlike time-travelling cop show 'Life on Mars' really, except here you have 1970's policemen working in 2005.The 'cold case' theme is perhaps a bit old hat, but in this case it fits in perfectly (why else would working police officers ignore the crimes). My daughter's review is 'If you like mysteries then it's really good, you can work it out, as it's a very logical program, then you check it out at the end. Plus you can tell the violence is fake and people just get beaten up and don't die. It's not for young children though, those about 9 and over'. Worth getting just to catch any episodes you missed on TV, or you can rent. My daughter is eagerly awaiting series three on DVD.

Great series seen as it should be (with no advert breaks!)
I have brought assorted series of ‘New Tricks’ as basically we never saw all of them when they first aired on TV years ago. I must admit while they are on a ‘loop’ on Freeview channels that seems to recycle themselves every two or three months as they start all over again plus the constant advert breaks spoil the programme as originally they were on BBC1 for a full hour without any interruptions, although a clue about the breaks is the fact that now on the above channel, they have been stretched to an hour and twenty minutes.. There is sometimes a version that lasts an hour but these must be heavily edited as there are still three or four advert breaks during its showing. The original series are quite entertaining but there is a point where the scripts or stories got silly and we stopped watching them with the last two or three series a waste of time once the original cast left one by one - Dennis Lawson seemed to be the only credible and watchable one left eventually. It’s sad it all ended on a whimper instead of going out with a bang, which I gather a lot of people we have spoken to seem to agree on. The good news is it’s still very watchable with the original gang in their roles via DVD’s - with no breaks - and considering the lack lustre stuff on TV nowadays, a blessing to watch.

Great watch
I had never seen the early series,so great to see how that team were formed, that first story was brilliant. I still watch the "newer" shows, but that first team were by far the best, great actors, good stories can be really amusing.

Expensive but delighted to have made the investment
This had been in my basket for quite a while, until Lockdown. The expense was the off putting thing but we are so glad to have leapt up to the purchase. The very first episode is always entertaining - full of promise that is delivered during the following programmes. We were delighted to find that the older originals were accompanied by the more recently revamped editions too. Such a contrast, but all good.Very few TV series give such a consistently high performance across its episodes, or have such a well balanced and experienced cast. The series could have been taylor made for the actors included here, or someone was highly skilled at casting. Few long running series continue to offer expanding or deepening roles for such proven actors. It is a joy to see them work together so naturally. The only very minor point with this box set is that an episode guide appears to be missing. Normally this could not be a problem, but with 36 discs giving 107 hours of viewing, finding one particular episode is difficult, so it's a downloading job from the internet that will help with establishing one particular programme from another.

Hervorragende Stories, hervorragende Schauspieler. Einfach stimmig!
