Q: Defective? Base loop doesn't allow sufficient clearance for the hasp to open and close.

Agree. Same problem. Not placement problem, the opening of the latch doesnt allow for enough clearance for the latch to actually clear/open unless you mount the latch so that it is hovering off the loop base plate, but that means you have to use a smaller lock because now there is less open loop... and it looks stupid.

Q: Do magnets stick to this metal?

Magnets will not stick tobthis metal. I tried it just to be certain. It will stick to the screws I used but not to any part of the lock.

Q: can this be attached to the aluminum frame of a sliding patio screen door and can the catch be attached at both 90 and 180 degrees

I never used this thing it’s weird and has no instructions
