What type paper should I purchase to use the marbling kit?

Most marbling instructions recommend unsized paper. Sizing is a starch or gelatin-like coating that is applied to the surface of some papers to make it less absorbent, so the pigment sits on the surface of the paper. Unsized paper is more absorbent, so the pigment is pulled beneath the surface. Many art papers come in both sized and unsized. It can be tedious finding out whether paper is sized/unsized, but there are a lot of people who sell or use paper who can tell you if a paper is sized or unsized. Once you get in that loop, you can find lots of affordable choices, including 'everyday' papers. A google search for sized/unsized works best if you use the name of a specific paper. I've found a lot of information about various art materials by googling my question followed by 'forum' or 'message board' - I've found many good to-the-point discussions that way. Also, watercolor and printmaking books sometimes have detailed sections about absorbency and sizing.You can also remove all or most of sizing from heavier papers, like watercolor paper, by wiping a damp sponge across the surface, then allowing it to dry.

For those that used this for classrooms, how many students did this last for, or about how many pieces of paper were you able to marble?

Two sets of paint every semester. about 160 students per semester and each student marbles two papers.But I don't follow the directions. Instead of using the paper circles here is what I do instead:Squirt a small amount of each color into a small soufflé cup.Have students use toothpicks, dipping the toothpick in the soufflé cup, then touching the toothpick to the surface of the water.This process takes longer, but your paint will last longer.I set up three stations and it takes about 2-3 days to get everyone done.

just bought this set and cannot get the ink to stay on top of the water. i watched a video first too! i am an artist used to using varying materials?

My kit came with a small piece of paper punched with six circles. This is the floating paper. You take out a circle, float it in the water (make sure the top and bottom of circle gets wet), and then drop the ink (one drop at a time) onto the paper circle. This will disperse the inks across the surface of the water. I remove the circle from the water before swirling the inks and printing. The circles can be used over and over again. If your kit doesn't have this included, I'd just take a piece of cardstock or watercolor paper (a smooth paper that won't dissolve and will float) and cut it into a 1/2" circle and it should work fine.

Will this work on aluminum enclosures?

I'm not sure what you mean by aluminum enclosure. If you mean marbling on metal - no. If you mean water in a metal pan - it depends on what material will take the ink, paper and cotton yes.
