Overall an interesting read on Scottish immigration to America.
There are areas throughout the book that leaves the reader without a clear connection to what they just read has to do with the Scots. Such as when he was detailing the French settling Acadia. Here he misses the mark and does not make the connection with what he is writing about the settling of Acadia had to with the people emigrating from Scotland. There are places in the book where the information he is conveying conflicts. One insistence is when Dobson states that there is no evidence to back up any large-scale settlement of Scots in the New England area during the period from 1763 and 1785. There are places in the book where the sources being described are of great advantage to one who wants to understand the Scottish emigration to America. One instance is when the journal of Janet Shaw is described. All in all, Dobson does do an admirable job in telling of the Scottish emigration to and the significant contributions that they made to the growth and success of the Americas.

Good reference of the period!
Has a lot of information to add to geneological research of the time period. Has many references in the back which extend the scope of this volume!

Scottish Emigration Not So Complete
While the book had a lot of evident research, there were huge holes in it. Mainly the emigration to America into the Philadelphia, PA and New Castle, DE areas of the Mid-1700's.Otherwise, this book will prove valuable to the researcher who wants background information of the likely causation of the emigration.Did not cover much on the Scots-Irish emigration.

Undecided
Was looking forward to receiving this book as my ancestors are some of the original settlers of Maryland and every bit of information I gather is important. Nice looking cover. However, I skipped reading the entire book and only covered the chapters that pertain to what I was researching. There is repetitive information in some of the chapters. When I have more time, I will read the entire book. That said, an addition to my collection of reference material.

Wonderful resource for tracing old Scottish roots
Wonderful resource for tracing old Scottish roots. Found info dating back to the mid 1600's for my family, which emigrated to Canada before eventually coming to the US in early 1900's.
