After encountering a chain slip that left my Trek freewheel bent and malfunctioning, I was on the hunt for a reliable replacement. Installation was a breeze, and it seamlessly fit into my bike's drivetrain system. These things tend to be hit or miss and often require a little research. The research I way heavily on is what other people are saying in their respective reviews. I had an incredibly bent rim and the old cassette was so seized I tried to take the bearings apart to remove it. A few dozen micro bbs went flying. Not only did this part get my bike in rideable shape, it saved the hassle of trying to rebuild the old one, was conveniently easy to install, it arrived overnight, and and and the gearing ratio is far superior than the old one! Just as everyone has commented your climbing will improve substantially!

I buy multiples of these in 7 and 8sp styles for refurbishing used bikes. Shimano compatible and cost effective. I recommend anti sieze paste or red grease for installation so it can be removed in a decade or 2 for replacement.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: It's the only FW with even steps between gears. However, it makes clinking noises under load. I used this to get a 7 speed rear and a lower low on my restored 1987 Cannondale SR500. Regrettably, I just ordered the Shimano model. UPDATE: The noise was a broken rear axle, not this freewheel. So, I upgraded my rating. It still could be a bit lighter.

Work well like it should be

Like Tom, I chose this for its even progression between all cogs, rather than a single "stump puller" cog stuck on a standard FW.

The fat bikes that were sold at Costco, Northrock, is not gear low enough for steep hills or snowy bogging. This fits great and works well with the stock Shimano derailer while providing a larger range of gears. You will need the splined tool to remove the old cassette.

As with everything else during this pandemic, this item was EXTREMELY hard to get. I had to put a web monitor on multiple sites and waited forever for this to come back in stock. This was an excellent upgrade for my son's bike. The added low gear allows my son to climb the bigger hills with me without having to get off and push. The gap between 2 and 1 is small enough to allow for effortless shifting. Shifting is smooth across the entire range and I couldn't ask for more. Sometimes the chain makes a metallic ping sound as you upshift to 2nd gear. I think it's due to the larger gap between the two cogs. This doesn't affect shifting performance at all. I had to order a new chain as the old chain was too short for the large cog, so you may want to think about that.
