Matchless Mouchoir de Monsieur - Guerlain's underrated marvel! Universal Fougere appeal and refinement.
I'm thankful to actually FIND this cologne and have it sent out speedily. For that, let us be grateful to the perfume gods. The Yeti is easier to track down than MdM! White truffles have been easier to procure. For all the sniping about the Amazon effect on retail, this is one occasion when it makes getting things you want blessedly easy.I've worn and continue to wear, several Guerlain scents.Jicky, Shalimar, Vol de Nuit, Eau de Coq, Eau de Imperiale and the discontinued, long-lamented Attrape Coeur.I'm certain most of you reading this are familiar with Jicky's structure and embodiment of a classic Fougere so there's no need to reiterate its timeless, universal appeal. I've often thought of Jicky and Mouchoir de Monsieur as first cousins. Mouchoir is more honeyed and mellow and has a longer-lasting sillage. For all its beguiling charm, Jicky's sillage is evanescent and re-sprays are necessary in the EDT version. MdM lasts about 4-5 hours on my skin before a light top-up.MdM's history amuses me. I love the inverse Edwardian snobbery of Guerlain issuing the scent to only two men: the French actor Jean-Claude Brialy and King Juan Carlos of Spain. That's it. Only those two. For reasons best known to themselves (and what a P.R. tease that was!) Guerlain deigned to release the scent for general sale and let mere mortals breathe its rarefied aroma of bottled elegance. Title aside, this is a scent that would suit any person who wants to try a quintessential Guerlain perfume.I've read that some think this is an old man's scent (and why by the way, is that a bad thing? Are we so ageist in our arrogance?) but I say, "What a fabulously-chic old man that would be!" I'm betting a poorly-stored bottle was to blame for the resulting funkiness. In MdM, my nose expands and smells an engrossing, oddly comforting mélange redolent of Hay, Ferns, Lavender and Amber, all undercut with a touch of Civet to anchor the top and middle notes. Rather like a Fin de Sicele 'Gypsy Water' by Byredo. That drop of civet is a nod to it's Kissing Cousin - Jicky. Honestly, do try it if you're hesitant. It's a glorious perfume and not at all exotic given it's history and provenance. Not many perfumes can be worn comfortably year round and this is one of them. It doesn't announce itself with trumpets but offers its tribute of muted sensuality to those who come close enough to you warrant it.I like wearing this scent when reading Trollope's Barchester Chronicles or the Palliser series. For Mr. Turin,' Mouchoir evokes Rupert Everett channeling Beau Brummell - for my part, it puts me in mind of Plantagenet Palliser with his simple yet impeccable manners and inherent noblesse. The one problem that bedevils me with MdM is how to travel with it. That thumping-great bottle is a nuisance to pack safely. I'm trying a gizmo from Sephora which promises to lever the amount you need OUT of the bottle and into the attached atomizer: don't even try to detach the collar from the bottle yourself! I've tried it and it was a waste on all fronts. I'll update this review if the new gadget works. So, there's my paean of praise for a scent close to my heart and a great perennial favourite. A masterpiece, really. A Fougere to dream about.I liken great perfumes to wonderful jewels. If Jicky is a Kashmir Sapphire and Shalimar a Golconda Diamond of the First Water, it seems to me that Mouchoir de Monsieur is a rare and beautiful Pigeon's Blood Ruby. Not to put too fine a point on it, it smells bloody marvellous! And isin't that what it's about, anyway? Smelling gooood?Update: Decanting deviceApril 10, 2018The scent decanter I mentioned above works very well. Finally - a way to travel with a much-loved scent without carrying additional weight. Were it up to me alone, this would not be a problem: I like seeing the bottle when I'm in a place not my own as it anchors me much like an animal marking its territory. When weight or space is an issue however - this WORKS!Thank you for taking the time to read this review - I appreciate you doing so.

Smells like a dirty taxi.
Smells like the air freshener used in certain taxi cabs in Chicago to cover certain smells.

Smells like an old man
I typically love Guelain fragrances, but this one is an exception. Smells absolutely foul when first sprayed on, then powders down to the smell of an old man.

Very interesting men's cologne
Doesn't have the staying power that I like. 2 or 4 hours and then it is gone. Men's version of Jicky which is why I bought it. A little too powdery for my taste.

A Very Special Fragrance For Those Seeking Uniqueness!
Considering MdM was launched in 1904, it's a stunning throwback into another place, another time! I enjoy the simplicity of the fine quality ingredients which never overpower and always seem perfect for any occasion. The opening freshness of citrus contrasts with the heart of Rose, Jasmine and Iris; to be fine tuned to the earthy subtle base of Amber, Civet and Vanilla. It's a rare scent that mostly flys low under the radar of today's designer based smell a likes. I appreciate MdM for its uniqueness, quality and obscurity, as since not another person in the room will be wearing it, thus becoming your very own secret!*If you cannot find Mouchoir de Monsieur, Jicky and Vol de Nuit also by Guerlain are very close cousins. The all possess that magical "Guerlainade" that is unique to this historical fragrance house.

Guerlain Mouchoir De Monsieur
A classic of classics. Launched in 1904 Mouchoir De Monsieur (The Gentalman's Handkerchief) is a timeless, complex oriental that lasts well on my skin. I never get any animalic smell some complain of (it has civit), but I do agree it's not for hot weather, I feel that is best left for Imperial, Eau De Guerlain, or Cologne du 68. This is in my top 3 with Derby (unfortunately very rare at this writing), and Eau De Guerlain. This can, also, be difficult to find and sometimes way overpriced. I was quite willing to pay the price here. I've had good luck with Amazon for a number of hard to find fragrances and can often get better prices, so I usually start here.
