Yes, squirrels can get into this feeder. What I've done is use a cage for my tube feeder, which is easy to find. I found mine at Wild Birds Unlimited, but you can get them online. The squirrels can't get in, but my tiny birds can. It works perfectly.

Q: The birds can find the holes to get the thistle?

This is not a feeder I would use with thistle seed. I have have several of these in the larger size as well as this one and I use them with black oil sunflower and seed mixtures. If you are looking to attract goldfinches I would suggest an actual thistle seed feeder which has very tiny holes :)

Q: new base for my easy clean feeder?

Not sure which base you mean. The one that came with your original feeder has a life time warranty. Call their customer service number and they will mail you a replacement for free. They're great people to deal with, I have. They also make an add-on base available on Amazon which my birds really like. Good luck-Dennis
