Q: Will it measure through painted or coated surfaces such as painted air tanks?

I have used it through paint on castings, and it appears to work. The only time I struck problems was when the coating was thicker - like a layer of polymer over 2mm thick on a paper machine roll cover. For that, we had to grind off the coating to get back to bare steel.
